Clinical/Medical Experiences

All students must gain experience in a healthcare setting if they plan to apply to medical school. These experiences can be paid or unpaid, in any setting. Students can even include time spent caring for family members in need of medical treatment. Particular value is attached to experiences that involve interacting directly with underserved patients.

Many students begin by volunteering at a large hospital, and then move on to more specialized experiences. Hospitals and free clinics typically have a page on their website where they collect information on potential volunteers.  Here are some websites of local suggestions, but any clinical location is acceptable:

Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute
Cabrini Clinic
Cass Clinic
Children's Hospital of Michigan
Community Homeless Interprofessional Clinic
Detroit Medical Center
Gary Burnstein
Henry Ford Cancer Institute
Henry Ford Hospital
Hospice of Michigan
Malta Dental and Medical Clinic
Wyandotte Clinic for the Working Uninsured

This Patient Care Panel workshop is designed to give pre-health students information about volunteer opportunities at area hospitals. Volunteering with patients is expected and valuable to all pre-health students. For up-to-date workshops, please visit our workshop series page.
