Career changer

After spending time in the larger work world, individuals may decide to pursue medicine. These career changers have two general options: unstructured coursework, or a program focused on preparing non-STEM individuals for medical school. MedPrep is a popular program in Southeast Michigan. The National Association of Advisors in the Health Professions maintains a database of other programs across the country.

Students pursuing this route via unstructured coursework should anticipate that it will take 2 or more years of science coursework to be ready to apply to medical school. Actual timeline will vary based on individual circumstances. The application cycle takes an additional year to complete.
