Academic Enrichment Programs

Academic enrichment programs are educational opportunities sponsored by colleges, universities, or other not-for-profit organizations that offer additional, relative content.  Examples may include Summer Medical and Dental Education Programs, Summer Health Professions Education Programs, and Lessons in a Lunchbox.  Many dental schools offer some kind of dental profession overview course on learning management systems, such as Canvas, Blackboard, or Coursera, for free or at a low-cost. Below are a few academic enrichment programs that former WSU students have participated in or applied to:

  1. Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP)
  2. Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP)
  3. UDM Summer Enrichment Program
  4. UM Profile for Sucess
  5. Michigan Health Sciences Summer Institute
  6. Introduction to Dental Medicine (UPenn)
  7. Dentistry 101 (UM)

Manual Dexterity and Dental School

Often, dentists are required to work in small, tight spaces to perform specific procedures. Good hand-eye coordination is essential to the field of dentistry. There will be a place on the AADSAS application for pre-dental students to record the activities they have engaged in to practice their manual dexterity. Examples of activities that past students have discussed in this portion of the application include:

  • Cross Stitching
  • Sewing
  • Arts & Crafts
  • Playing Musical Instruments
  • Auto Repair
  • Makeup and Nail Polish Application
