Faculty Final Exam Information

Exam Guidance for Faculty

All classes meeting before 8:30 a.m. and at/after 5:00 p.m. will hold final exams in their regularly scheduled classroom at their regular meeting time during the final exam week and be limited to their scheduled hours. Requests for extended hours will be granted if a classroom is available and the instructor has determined that the extended hours will not cause students a conflict with their other final exams.

Classes that meet Wednesday-Friday before 5:00 p.m. do not fit into the grid. Towards the end of the semester, the Scheduling Office will send a list of classes that meet in General Purpose classrooms but do not fit into the grid to the departmental scheduling coordinators and ask them to confirm when the final exam for each class will be held. Rooms will only be scheduled if the Scheduling Office is notified that the class will need to meet for a final exam. If available, the regularly scheduled classroom will be scheduled for the final exam; however, if there is going to be a conflict with the room, the class that is scheduled according to the matrix takes precedence, and the other class will be assigned to a different General Purpose classroom.

Any deviation from the final exam schedule must be initiated by the instructor, approved by the instructor's dean, and scheduled through the Scheduling Office. Requests for extended hours will be granted if the instructor has determined the extended hours will not cause their students to have conflicts with other final exams.

Students are not required to take more than two exams in one day. A student with more than two scheduled final exams on one day may (not must) petition to the instructor of the course with the lowest number students enrolled to arrange an alternate time for the final exam. Such petitions must be presented to the instructor as early as possible, but no less than one week prior to the scheduled date of the final exam.

In situations where conflicts exist between the regular day schedule and the group exam schedule, the group exam takes precedence. If there is a conflict among the regular schedule, group exam and evening schedule, the group exam takes precedence. The instructor with the fewest students in the remaining two classes will offer alternate arrangements to students.

Any student unable to take a final exam at the scheduled time due to religious convictions shall petition the instructor in advance of the final exam to arrange an alternate time.

Group/Common Examinations - The published schedule for group exams is applicable for all courses that have this final exam format, regardless of how the section met over the course of the term.  A suggestion for faculty is that you are as flexible as possible with this format, perhaps offering students a window of time to complete the final exam on the specified day.

Synchronous/Face-to-Face Sections - The published schedule may be used.  Feel free to allow students more time to complete the exams.

Asynchronous Sections - This guidance may not be the best option for you, or you may have already made other arrangements.  The Registrar's Office created a list of courses and sections with a randomized day assigned during the final exam period.  You may choose to use this day for your asynchronous exams.  Again, it may make sense to leave your exams open for an extended period of time (for two days, for example) to allow greater flexibility for students and to hopefully avoid conflicts.

Students who are registered with Student Disability Services (SDS) and who are approved for testing accommodations should submit their exam requests to Student Disability Services at least one week in advance of the final exam. Federal law requires that a student registered with SDS is entitled to the reasonable accommodations specified in the student’s accommodation letter, which might include allowing the student to take the final exam on a day or at a time different than the rest of the class.

Final grades are expected within 72 hours of the final exam.
