Eric Van Tielen joins the Department of Theatre and Dance as an Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre, a first for the department. Before joining the faculty at WSU, Eric worked professionally as an actor based primarily in New York City. In addition to his acting career, he taught at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in two departments: Voice Production and Speech and Musical Theatre. He also founded a successful private acting/singing studio in NYC with clientele ranging from young, emerging artists to Broadway regulars.
Eric's Broadway/Touring credits include: Les Miserables, Fiddler on the Roof, A Tale of Two Cities, and Prince of Broadway, directed by theatre luminary, Hal Prince. Other acting credits include: Utah Shakespeare Festival, Cincinatti Playhouse in the Park, Indiana Repertory Co, Pioneer Theatre Co, Berkshire Theatre Festival, and Music Theatre Wichita. He has also toured internationally as a soloist with the Tokyo Philharmonic in Disney on Classic.
Eric holds a BFA in Acting from Utah State University. He also holds an MFA in Acting from Indiana University, where he trained concurrently in the classical voice program. An accomplished pianist, Eric frequently collaborates as a Music Director and Creator of new theatre pieces using music.
