Dr. Chen studied in the National University of Singapore on a Singapore government scholarship, initally majored in computer science and later graduated as a top student of biochemistry. He was then admitted to the University of Cambridge but stayed in Singapore to work with Dr. Yunn-Hwen Gan on tumor immunology and microbial pathogenesis. He did doctoral research in immunology at Weill Cornell Medicine, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Hospital for Special Surgery, and had postdoctoral training at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai with Dr. Andrea Cerutti. He also worked with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) on global initiatives of sustainable urbanization and public health and organized seminars in the UN Headquarters to host the world's leaders and organizations to share experiences and discuss solutions towards the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
He has contributed to some significant scientific discoveries, such as the function of the antibody immunoglobulin D and immune protective mechaisms against preterm labor. The immune system regulates almost every physiological process and is intimately linked to health and disease. The goal of the Chen lab is to understand the immune regulation of inflammation, infection, reproduction, allergy, and cancer. We apply various molecular, cellular, and imaging techniques in studies involving cells, animal models, human specimens, and cohorts.
One focus of our current work is to understand how our antibodies diversify and are produced by B lymphocytes, and why these processes are dysregulated in immunodeficiencies, autoimmune diseases, and cancer. Specifically, we are identifying molecules and mechanisms that regulate class switch recombination and somatic hypermutation of antibodies in systemic and mucosal barrier tissues, which are important for effective immune defense and the avoidance of autoimmunity and lymphoma.
Another focus is to understand the contribution of the immune system to healthy reproduction and immune dysfunction in reproductive diseases. Recent studies in the lab have revealed immune mechanisms that guard against preterm birth and promote pregnancy to term, as well as the impact of maternal diseases on infant health. We are also studying the immunological interaction between the mother and the fetus during pregnancy and infancy, specifically how changes in the mother's immunity during stress, infections, allergies, and cancer impact fetal development and contribute to infant diseases.

We apply molecular, cellular and histological techniques and use animal models and human specimens to understand the mechanisms of antibody diversification and production by B lymphocytes, such as immunoglobulin class switching and somatic hypermutation. We are also studying how these processes are coupled to B lymphocyte differentiation and antibody production in barrier tissues such as the intestinal, respiratory and reproductive tract, and in tumor tissues. These processes are critical to the generation and maintenance of an antibody repertoire for effective immune defense and the avoidance of autoimmune diseases. Defects in these processes can result in immunodeficiency, autoimmunity, lymphoma and other types of cancer associated with infections.
In addition, we are applying immunological methods to study some common reproductive disorders, such as preterm birth, and are developing new therapeutic and preventive methods to reduce adverse pregnancy outcomes and the associated infant diseases, such as infections and allergies.
