As Adjunct Professor, Media Arts & Studies in the WSU College of Fine, Performing & Communication Arts (CFPCA), Tonya V Thomas is an education architect, productivity tech influencer, process improvement expert, and multimedia communications leader with nearly 25 years of experience in healthcare, information systems, training and human performance support, productivity consulting, public speaking, group facilitation, web development, PR and corporate communications, social media, project management, leadership development and non-profit operations management.

She is currenlty the developer and instructor of COM 2310 "Intro to Modern Web Design," coaching young creatives in CFPCA in the art and discipline of web design best practices as applies to the creation of their own online portfolios, where they can showcase their creative work, academic growth, and community service.

In addition to teaching in the Comm/Media Arts program, Tonya also serves in the following roles:

In 2023, Tonya Anderson (Thomas) joined the Office of Learning and Teaching as Curriculum Development Consultant. She studied at WSU earlier in life, and began working with the university in 2017. Tonya specializes in interactive, media-rich, accessible online learning development and quality assurance. Her charge in OLT includes:

  • Managing the SOM Curriculum Inventory process.
  • Establishing and serving as Program Director of the SOM Course QuAD Program, improving the student experience through a standardized process of quality-aligned course design. This program encompasses faculty training and course design review aligned with the HE Quality Matters(TM) Framework, in which she has been certified.
  • Empowering faculty and enriching the student experience through the implementation of innovative education technology applications.
  • Serving as co-director of the Near Peer Teaching Program, a volunteer-based tutoring program that supplies SOM with student lab and clinical skills coaches, one-on-one tutors, and Step Prep mentors.
  • Supporting OLT and interdepartmental processes through process improvement, workflow automation, project management, and data analytics.

She is also an adjunct professor of Communications at WSU, and a long-time mentor for the Wayne Women Lead Next Level Career Conversations Program.

Prior to joining the Office of Learning and Teaching, Anderson served as instructional design/performance improvement consultant and senior business systems analyst with Finance & Business Operations at WSU; as Director of Systems Innovation at TechTown (Detroit); as Director, Educational Technology & Innovation (ET+I), The College for Creative Studies, Detroit, MI; and as instructional design lead, project manager, and Quality Matters Coordinator with the Academic Technologies Group at Oakland Community College, where she was responsible for establishing quality course development standards, review and approval processes, and mandatory faculty training required for the institution to obtain its HLC online learning accreditation. Before that, she served as Director, Staff Learning & Development with Teach For America, where her chief charge was to oversee the effort to transform classroom training to web-based learning and performance support resources. She has also held education leadership roles with UnitedHealth Group, The University of Michigan, and Trinity Health.

Ms. Anderson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Instructional Design from Walden University and a Master of Arts degree in Educational Technology from the University of Michigan. She is certified in project management and Lean Six Sigma process improvement, and also has two decades of experience managing creative design work and corporate communications.

In her downtime, she manages a local band, enjoys music, singing, photography, painting, interior decorating, spending time with her family, and being anywhere near open water.
