Detroit research team to develop novel strategies to identify genetic contributions to cancer risk and overcome barriers to genetic testing for African Americans - Division of Research & Innovation - Wayne State University

Research Description:

Dr. Beebe-Dimmer is the Leader of the Population Studies and Disparities Research Program and the Scientific Director of the Epidemiology Research Core at the Karmanos Cancer Institute (KCI) and a co-investigator on the Metropolitan Detroit Cancer Surveillance System cancer registry. Her research program focuses on the contribution of germline variants to hereditary prostate cancer and understanding the biologic underpinnings of racial disparity in cancer risk and outcomes, as well as the contribution of obesity, physical inactivity and associated cardiometabolic abnormalities on risk of cancer as well as outcomes after cancer diagnoses. She is the MPI on the Detroit Research On Cancer Survivors (ROCS) Study, which has enrolled more than 5,000 African American cancer survivors and is focused on understanding the causes of poorer outcomes in this population. She is the MPI on a recently funded P01 focused on understanding the genetic landscape of African American cancer survivors diagnosed with multiple primary cancers leveraging the Detroit ROCS resource. She is the PI, MPI and Qualified Collaborator on a number of externally-funded, peer-reviewed investigations focused exclusively on investigating the contribution of genetic and environmental determinants to the observed racial disparity in prostate cancer risk and outcomes after diagnosis in African American men including the RESPOND cohort which is the largest single investigation focused on understanding the genetic underpinnings of prostate cancer in African American men.
