General Education Updates

ALL general education exception requests must be sent to the Provost office through the general education petition form located at: https://provost.wayne.edu/genedtestingwaiverssubs

COVID P/NP Grading

The university will accept P/NP for general education for Fall 2020, Winter 2021, and  Spring/Summer 2021 semesters for WSU courses only. Transfer courses with similar grading will need to be requested through the general education petition form.

Transfer Plans

Archived plans with the old General Education courses can be found at the bottom of each community college list as: "Archived Transfer Plans prior to Fall 2018."

Please keep in mind that updates to these transfer plans are ongoing - meaning that contents may get updated as program requirements change and transfer courses are re-evaluated.

If you have seen any changes/updates that need to be made on a specific transfer plan, please contact Melissa Jimenez (bu3954@wayne.edu).

List of General Education Courses - Cognos Report

In the Advisor Portal in Cognos, you will find a General Education Course List. Running this list in Excel will generate a spreadsheet with two tabs, one sorted by Attribute Code, and one sorted by Subject Code. Selecting and "Academic Period" will generate the list of courses that are approved for general education during that term. This is updated as changes are made in Banner.

Basic Composition (BC)

  • Students demonstrating completion of a transferred IC/ICN course with no BC course on their record will be eligible to have BC waived.

Intermediate Composition (IC)

Due to changes in the requirements for Intermediate Composition (IC) for Fall 2018, a new attribute code, Intermediate Composition New (ICN), was has been created. See the current bulletin for designations.

IC courses with Cultural Inquiry (CI): Some English courses that had IC designation have been changed to Cultural Inquiry (CI) designation in Fall 2018. Note that these courses will not satisfy ICN if taken in Fall 2018 and beyond:

  • ENG 2100
  • ENG 2110
  • ENG 2120
  • ENG 2210
  • ENG 2310
  • ENG 2420
  • ENG 2560
  • ENG 2570

Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI)

If a current student is updated to the new General Education requirements, General Education courses taken in Spring/Summer 2018 or before primarily affect courses that could fulfill the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) requirement as well as courses that were previously designated to fulfill the Historical Studies (HS) requirement. Darin Ellis, Associate Provost for Academic Programs, has allowed the following exceptions for students who are updated into the new General Education requirements.

  • The exception type "Force Complete" with the following description: "Gen Ed courses completed before Fall 2018" will be added for students who completed all general education courses BEFORE fall 2018.

Additional DEI exceptions:

  • HON 1000 taken from Winter 2015 to Fall 2018 can be used to fulfill the (DEI) requirement using the "Also Allow" exception in Degree Works.

Wayne Experience (WE)

  • Wayne Experience (WE) will be automatically waived if a student transfers a minimum of 24 credits to WSU. Advanced Placement (AP) tests, International Baccalaureate (IB) tests, CLEP exams, High School Dual Enrollment, and Early/Middle college DO NOT count towards waiving WE.

  • APX 1000 taken Fall 2019: Exceptions are approved for students that have taken APX 1000 to count towards Wayne Experience (WE) in Fall 2019. Exception type "Also Allow" with the following description: "General Education course completed Fall 2019" will be entered in DegreeWorks.

Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA)

Students transferring to WSU with MTA in fall 2018 and beyond will have satisfied all of Wayne State General Education requirements.
