MACRAO Innovation Award recognizes Transfer Student Success Center

The Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (MACRAO) awarded the Wayne State University Transfer Student Success Center (TSSC) the 2017 Innovation in Transfer Award at its annual conference in November.

The award recognizes innovative programs, practices, partnerships, policies and activities that improve the ability of an institution to serve transfer students and to recognize those who have created and implemented them.

The TSSC was created in 2014 by the Division of Educational Outreach and International Programs with the goal of supporting transfer students, helping them navigate the university, and advocating on their behalf both internally with academic and student services units, and externally through partnerships with community colleges.

"We are honored and pleased that Wayne State University was recognized by MACRAO for commitment to supporting transfer students and their success," said Ahmad Ezzeddine, associate vice president for educational outreach and international programs. "Transfer students are an integral and important part of our undergraduate student body and our priority at the Transfer Student Success Center is to ensure that their learning experience at Wayne State is productive, smooth, and successful."

The TSSC's goal is to provide transfer students with the help needed to complete their degree at WSU. Whether transferring from a community college or transitioning from another four-year institution, starting at a new university creates unique challenges for transfer students. The TSSC provides a wide variety of pre- and post-enrollment services for transfer students, including information and assistance with admissions, transfer credit evaluation and guidance on degree completion, as well as supporting a learning community for transfer students

The center promotes success across all phases of a student's academic career - from prospect through graduation. It provides transfer students with easy access to information and assistance in transitioning to Wayne State with direct, individual service. The center also builds engagement, develops agreements and executes strategic partnerships with community colleges.

"We are very pleased to receive this award," said Doug Freed, director of the TSSC. "It builds on the 2017 national Phi Theta Kappa Honor Roll designation the university received and is another validation of the vision in establishing the TSSC. The focus on transfer students is leading to their success."
