Join the Educational Outreach team for Heart Walk 2018!

There's still time to join the Office of International Programs/Educational Outreach team in the American Heart Association's 2018 Heart Walk on May 12. The event is hosted by Wayne State University and includes a noncompetitive 1 mile or a timed 5k run.

WSU President M. Roy Wilson is co-chair of the event, along with Henry Ford Health System CEO Wright Lassiter. When Wilson challenged 100 passionate individuals to act as team coaches across the university, Felicia Rush of the Office of International Students and Scholars stepped up.

"I invite anyone who is interested to join our team in the fight to make healthier, longer lives possible for everyone," Rush says. "Heart Walk is so much more than an event to me. It's my opportunity to change the future and make a positive impact in the lives of those who are affected by heart disease and stroke. The power we have together far outweighs what President Wilson or I can do alone."

The Heart Walk is an annual event in cities across the country to get people walking because physical activity is one way to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

"This year, Wayne State aims to engage more than 1,000 Wayne State walkers in the Heart Walk," Wilson said. "One of our primary goals is improving the health of everyone in our communities, which is why Wayne State University continues to support the American Heart Association."

In his Sesquicentennial Celebration address in January, Wilson challenged the campus to perform 150,000 community service hours by the end of 2018. "Participating in the Heart Walk would be an excellent way for you to help us meet this challenge," he said.
