Master's scholarships

The Graduate School offers several scholarship opportunities and awards for master's students. See the below information for the AGRADE Scholarship, the Graduate School Retention Scholarship, Completion Scholarship. The Heberlein Teaching Award is also open to master's students who have teaching responsibilities at the university.

 

AGRADE Scholarship

Deadline:  March 24, 2017

Amount: The AGRADE Scholarship covers up to 4 graduate credits of tuition in Fall 2017 at the in-state WSU Graduate School rate effective that semester. 

What is AGRADE?

Some Colleges and Schools at Wayne State University permit outstanding undergraduate majors to petition for admission into an AGRADE program. AGRADE programs enable qualified seniors to enroll simultaneously in an undergraduate and graduate program and apply credits towards both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in their major field.

The aim of this scholarship is to reward AGRADE students who have graduated with their Bachelor's degree and enrolled in their Master's only year at Wayne State. 

Eligibility       

To qualify for this scholarship, the applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • This scholarship is specifically for AGRADE students who are making the transition to their Master's-only year. Thus, students must have enrolled in AGRADE during their undergraduate years and be graduating from their Bachelor's program at Wayne State University no later than May 2018.
  • Students must be enrolled in their first or second Master's-only semester during Fall 2017.
  • Students must be enrolled in at least 3 credits of graduate level coursework in Fall 2017.
  • Students must have satisfactory academic standing in their departments and an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Students are eligible only if they have not received Graduate School funding for Fall 2017. Specifically,
    • Students receiving tuition scholarships from The WSU Graduate School (e.g., Graduate Professional Scholarships) are not eligible.
    • In addition, GTA, GSA, and GRA recipients and students receiving tuition-paying fellowships are not eligible.

Application Process

To apply, student should submit:

  • An official copy of their WSU undergraduate transcript and a copy of their acceptance letter to a WSU Master's Program for Fall 2017;
  • An approved Master's Plan of Work that reflects their AGRADE status;
  • An essay explaining academic accomplishments, financial need, and personal strengths as it pertains to their educational goals (for example: initiative, persistence, etc.); AND
  • A letter from the Graduate Director for their current Master's Program addressing the student's satisfactory progress in their program of study
  • Students are to compile all application materials and upload using the application link. 

Selection Process

Award decisions will be made by committee and will be announced approximately two months after the submission deadline.

AGRADE Scholarship application

 

Graduate School Retention Scholarship for Master's Students

Deadline: March 24, 2017

Amount: The Retention Scholarship covers up to 4 graduate credits of tuition in Fall 2017 at the in-state WSU Graduate School rate effective that semester.

In an effort to retain and support students engaged in Master's studies, this scholarship is available to degree-seeking students who demonstrate financial need and have been continuously enrolled in a Wayne State University Master's program. 

Eligibility        

Applicants who qualify for this scholarship must:

  • Be enrolled in Fall 2017 for a minimum of 3 graduate credits;
  • Carry a 3.0 GPA in their Master's program, as reflected on an unofficial transcript (or if the student will not have posted grades by the deadline, then the student should submit the undergraduate transcript and ensure that adequate progress as indicated by grades on assignments is noted in the Graduate Director letter);
  • Be continuously enrolled since at least Fall 2017 or earlier and be making satisfactory academic progress in a Master's program;
  • Must have a Master's Plan of Work on file with the student's college or school;
  • Must have more than 12 credits left to complete graduate degree
  • Students are eligible only if they have not received Graduate School funding for Fall 2017. Specifically,
    • Students receiving tuition scholarships from The WSU Graduate School (e.g., Graduate Professional Scholarships) are not eligible.
    • In addition, GTA, GSA, and GRA recipients and students receiving tuition-paying fellowships are not eligible.

Application Process

To apply, students should submit:

  • An unofficial copy of their graduate transcript;
  • A copy of their approved Master's Plan of Work;
  • A personal statement of no more than 500 words describing how they meet the award criteria and explaining academic accomplishments, financial need, and personal strengths as it pertains to their educational goals (for example: initiative, persistence, etc.); AND
  • A letter from the Graduate Director for their current Master's Program addressing the student's satisfactory progress in their program of study.   
  • Students are to compile all application materials and upload using the application link.

Selection Process

Award decisions will be made by committee and will be announced approximately two months after the submission deadline.

Graduate School Retention Scholarship for Master's Students application

 

Graduate School Completion Scholarship for Master's Students

Deadline: March 24, 2017

Amount: The Completion Scholarship covers up to 4 graduate credits of tuition in Fall 2017 at the in-state WSU Graduate School rate effective that semester.

The aim of this scholarship is to provide tuition assistance to students who are nearing the end of their graduate studies at WSU so that they complete their degrees in a timely fashion and enter the workforce.

Eligibility       

To qualify for this scholarship, the applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Students must be enrolled in at least 3 credits of graduate level coursework at WSU in Fall 2017.
    • Students must have satisfactory academic standing in their departments and an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher in their current Master's program.
    • The completion of the Master's degree in Fall 2017 must be a reasonable benchmark: The student should have no more than 12 credits left to complete at the time of application, and the Master's student should be applying for graduation no later than Fall 2017.
    • Students who have received a completion scholarship in the past are not eligible for an additional completion scholarship.
    • Students are eligible only if they have not received Graduate School funding for Fall 2017. Specifically,
      • Students receiving tuition scholarships from The WSU Graduate School (e.g., Graduate Professional Scholarships) are not eligible.
      • In addition, GTA, GSA, and GRA recipients and students receiving tuition-paying fellowships are not eligible.

Application Process

To apply, students should submit:

  • A copy of their approved Master's Plan of Work;
