Biography:

Dr. Sylvie Naar is a Professor and Director of the Division of Behavioral Sciences in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences at Wayne State University. Dr. Naar has had several federally funded projects developing, testing and implementing behavioral interventions to reduce health disparities in children, adolescents and young adults, including two center grants from the National Institutes of Health. She is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, and has provided trainings locally, nationally, and internationally for over 15 years for many types of providers including medical providers, mental health providers, and community health workers. She also has funded projects to study how to implement behavioral interventions such as Motivational Interviewing (MI) in real-world settings. She is also a licensed pediatric psychologist. Dr. Naar has worked closely with the developers of MI to author the first textbook on the use of MI with adolescents and young adults and a second text book on the integration of MI and other behavioral interventions. She has experience in multi-site evaluation studies of complex, multi-level interventions for the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control, and the Health Resources and Service Administration. Dr. Naar has authored over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Research:

Dr. Sylvie Naar-King's primary research interests are obesity and disease prevention. She is an expert in behavioral interventions to reduce health disparities in youth including both T1 behavioral translation research (basic behavioral science to intervention development) and T2 translation (efficacy to implementation). She has several federally funded projects focusing on behavioral interventions to improve health outcomes for youth with chronic medical conditions.
