Name change for Wayne State University’s School of Library and Information Science

August 21, 2017

The School of Library and Information Science at Wayne State University is changing its name to the School of Information Sciences (SIS). The change was approved by the Wayne State Board of Governors in June and reflects the expanded coursework and degree options offered by the school, including a forthcoming master of science in information management.

"The name School of Information Sciences more accurately describes the broad range of academic coursework we offer," explained Associate Dean and Professor Stephen Bajjaly. "It encompasses the full range of information professions and reflects the reality that the degree programs we provide encompass a breadth and depth of information-related studies and include, but also go beyond, traditional librarianship into information management and technology training."

The School of Information Sciences is currently celebrating 50 years of accreditation by the American Library Association. The school offers two fully online degrees, a master of library and information science and, beginning in winter 2018, a master of science in information management. It also offers a joint MLIS and M.A. in history, four graduate certificates, and a school library media specialist endorsement. SIS has over 5,500 alumni across North America and around the world.

The name change formally took effect on Aug. 17. Those seeking additional details can visit http://sis.wayne.edu/ for more information.
