WSU, President Irvin Reid host 1997-98 McCree program scholars
February 2, 1998
Wayne State University President Irvin Reid will help welcome students as the university hosts the 1997-98-induction ceremony for the Wade H. McCree Jr. Incentive Scholarship Program from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 2, at the McGregor Memorial Conference Center.
The program, funded by Michigan's public universities, offers guaranteed tuition scholarships to eligible students. It is designed to encourage good academic performance throughout high school to selected students.
Tonight's ceremony honors the students from this year's program, along with their family members and guests. It also allows students to meet with representatives of the universities they will be attending through the McCree program.
Participants in the program are ninth-grade students enrolled in various Detroit public high schools. Of the nearly 200 students attending tonight's ceremony, 15 to 20 will be assigned to WSU.
Eligibility criteria include graduation from a participating high school with at least a 3.00 grade-point average; a 21 composite score on the American College Test or an equivalent score or higher on the Scholastic Aptitude Test; application to the designated university by April 15 of the student's senior year in high school; and applying for financial aid opportunities within the McCree program guidelines.
Named in honor of the former Solicitor General of the United States and Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Michigan, the Wade H. McCree Jr. Incentive Scholarship Program reflects a unified commitment by Michigan's public universities to further increase and enhance opportunities in higher education for all qualified students regardless of financial need.
The program began in 1986 with 30 students and has grown to include well over 1,000 high school students statewide each year, in addition to those who already have gone on to college.
