Wayne State University to partner with Kellogg Foundation's National Day of Racial Healing, Jan. 16

In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Wayne State University will join the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and more than 130 organizations on Tuesday, Jan. 16, for a National Day of Racial Healing.

Wayne State’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Wayne State Law School’s Detroit Equity Action Lab, and the Office of Multicultural Student Engagement will host a series of events on WSU’s main campus in an effort to heal the wounds created by racial, ethnic and religious bias and build an equitable and just society.

The day’s events include:

“Over the past year we’ve hosted a number of dialogues on campus to provide people a space to share thoughts and feelings in the wake of tragic or challenging national events,” said Marquita Chamblee, associate provost for diversity and inclusion and Wayne State’s chief diversity officer. “It’s important to be able to proactively engage in thoughtful conversation about what racial healing might look like on our campus and in the larger community. As we continue the work of building an inclusive community at Wayne State, providing ongoing educational and cultural events, such as this one, moves us closer to bringing that vision to pass.”

Members of the WSU community are also encouraged to complete the Diversity Campus Climate Survey, which will also launch on the National Day of Racial Healing. The survey provides an opportunity to every student, staff, faculty member and administrator make their voices are heard and share their perspectives and experiences of the environment on campus around issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

“To me, it’s important that every member of Wayne State community participates as a means of helping us better understand the areas of strength as well as those of concern, so we can begin to take immediate action to address the concerns even as we celebrate our strengths,” Chamblee said.
