Volunteer for the Warrior 150 Challenge - Day of Service

As part of Wayne State University’s yearlong Sesquicentennial Celebration, President M. Roy Wilson has launched the Warrior 150 Challenge.

“As Detroit’s research university and a committed member of our community, how should we celebrate?” Wilson asked a packed Community Arts Auditorium in January during the sesquicentennial kickoff event. “What about with a goal that shows our heart and our commitment?”

That goal is for the university to complete 150,000 volunteer hours in 2018. To help the campus community achieve this, Wayne State has collaborated with a variety of organizations in need of volunteers. For more information and to learn how to track volunteer hours, visit communityoutreach.wayne.edu.

“There is no limit to the number of hours each individual can contribute,” Wilson said. “I encourage you to participate individually or in teams. And I have no doubt that the Wayne State community will not only meet but exceed this goal.”

One group in need of Warrior volunteers is Life Remodeled, a local nonprofit that invests labor and resources into Detroit neighborhoods. Volunteers from the WSU community are in need on Saturday, April 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the Warrior 150 Day of Service with Life Remodeled. Volunteers will paint residential addresses on the curbs of properties throughout the surrounding neighborhood, help with beautification such as clean up and trash removal, and survey lots to determine board-ups, blight removal and tree/perennial plantings.

“The Warrior 150 Challenge is designed to engage and motivate all of WSU's stakeholder groups — students, faculty and staff — in meaningful community service,” said Patrick Lindsey, vice president of government and community affairs. “Many of our stakeholders already volunteer their time and talents in meaningful ways. This challenge will allow them greater opportunities to impact the community through the channel of the university.”
