MDOT closes Third Street overpass above I-94 in Detroit for safety

For public safety, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has closed the Third Street overpass above I-94 near Wayne State. A recent inspection of the overpass revealed structural deterioration in the bridge supports, requiring all traffic to be prohibited from using the overpass.

All southbound traffic (Third Street is one-way) will be directed to nearby Second Avenue to cross over I-94. The closure of the overpass does not impact any travel lanes on I-94. Originally constructed in 1955, the Third Street overpass last underwent repair in 1996. No decision has been made yet on any repair work and schedule.
