Campus conditions and requirements as of January 21, 2022

  • Remote instruction in place through Jan. 30, 2022. 
  • Campus Daily Screener required each day before coming to campus.
  • Visitors are required to complete the Guest Daily Screener each day before coming to campus. Nonvaccinated visitors are not permitted on campus.
  • Employees who can work from home should do so. 
  • Masks, fully covering nose and mouth, are required indoors for everyone, regardless of vaccination status.
  • All non-academic-related gatherings and student organization events on campus are cancelled, including those that have previously been approved. 
  • All university-sponsored or affiliated events, whether held on or off campus, must follow the campus mask/vaccine policy.

These requirements will be regularly updated to be consistent with current science and recommendations.

Unless otherwise noted, instruction is temporarily moved to a remote format for the beginning of the Winter 2022 semester. This does not change the modality of your class. When registering, take note of whether your classes are offered via traditional, online (synchronous or asynchronous) or hybrid formats. Specific programs may have further guidelines and procedures. Note: Schools that operate on a different calendar, such as the Law School and the School of Medicine, will communicate their class formats separately. For more information, visit our registration website.

Health and safety

The health and safety of our campus community remains our top priority. Guided by current data and both national and state guidelines, the COVID-19 vaccine and booster as well as the flu vaccine, are required for all individuals; this includes faculty and staff, whether they are working on campus or remotely. Masks are also required indoors. Please continue to complete the Campus Daily Screener before coming to campus each day and follow the health and safety guidelines.


Spectator attendance at sporting events will follow state guidelines for health and safety; guidelines for fans are available on the Athletics site. Coaches will communicate directly with teams any additional directives.

Housing, dining and retail

Housing is open to all students who wish to call campus home. Campus dining and retail options will be open. To apply for housing or take a virtual tour, visit the Housing and Residential Life website. Students planning to live on campus must submit proof of vaccination and booster.

Student life

The Dean of Students Office website is regularly updated with the latest campus engagement information, as well as student health and wellness opportunities through the Warrior Life program. Every Wednesday and Sunday (Sundays only in summer), Get Involved is delivered to students' WSU email inboxes to keep them informed of student activities, opportunities and student organizations news.

Campus events

 All university-sponsored or affiliated events, whether held on or off campus, must follow the campus mask/vaccine policy. For guidance on how to plan and get approval for a campus event, visit the Special Events webpage


Resources are available on the HR website to guide supervisors and employees. We encourage employees to speak with their supervisor about their options — including hybrid schedules and flexible work arrangements — and address any concerns they may have.

Campus Health Center

The Campus Health Center will continue to serve as the campus lead for tracking and reporting any COVID-19 cases on campus, as well as COVID-19 testing and vaccine distribution. The CHC will also be responsible for responding to any COVID-19 cases or outbreaks on campus, including isolating and quarantining individuals living in campus housing when necessary. The CHC will also continue to use the Campus Daily Screener to monitor cases on campus and guide the campus response. 

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Is Wayne State mandating the COVID-19 vaccine and booster? 

Yes, to best protect the health and safety of our campus community, all students, faculty and staff are required to receive their COVID-19 vaccination and booster. You can submit your proof of vaccination online.  More information is available on the vaccine mandate webpage. All faculty and staff are expected to comply with vaccine and booster requirements regardless of whether they are working remotely or on campus. 

Will Wayne State continue COVID testing?

COVID-19 testing will continue to be offered to enrolled students, faculty and staff through the Campus Health Center at no out-of-pocket cost.

Can employees continue to work remotely?

Where possible and appropriate, we encourage department leaders to be flexible in offering flexible work arrangements. Of course, some university activities require an on-campus presence. Employees should speak with their supervisor about their options, including flexible work arrangements and hybrid schedules. Regardless of work arrangements, all employees are expected to comply with vaccine and booster requirements. 

How do employees dispute perceived inequities in flexible work arrangements?

Employees should discuss desired work arrangements with their supervisor. If they are unable to reach a satisfactory arrangement, faculty and employees will have separate mechanisms for appealing their flexible arrangements:

  • Staff should reach out to their HR consultant.
  • Faculty and academic staff with similar concerns should work through the Office of Academic Personnel. If a solution cannot be found, faculty and staff should contact the Office of Equal Opportunity.

How will parking deductions be impacted by flexible work arrangements?

Employee paycheck deductions for parking have resumed. Employees with flexible work arrangements have the option to cancel parking deductions and pay upon entry. For more information on rates and options, visit the parking website.

How will campus respond to any outbreaks and health concerns?

We continue to require students, faculty and staff to complete the Campus Daily Screener every day before coming to campus; guests must complete a guest screener. The data provided will continue to help the Campus Health Center and Campus Health Committee assess the on-campus situation and respond to risks. We will also continue to monitor state and region data, as well as new guidance from the CDC and others and information concerning new variants or other risks. As throughout the pandemic, a series of pre-determined metrics will help guide our response should cases increase.

Are Wayne State's facilities safe?

Yes; our facilities staff has been on campus throughout the pandemic, cleaning, maintaining and ensuring that campus is safe for our return. The university continues to follow federal, state and local guidelines for indoor air quality. Campus buildings are compliant with the standards recommended by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Condition Engineers (ASHRAE) and consistent with the activities performed in the space. Buildings are ventilated with fresh air percentages well above the design levels. To meet the proper guidelines, all campus buildings use MERV 13 air filters as recommended by ASHRAE. Can I continue my degree if I decide to not be physically on campus?

Yes, depending on your degree. Wayne State now offers many hybrid, synchronous and asynchronous sections of courses, alongside its in-person options. A search for your desired course should identify all of the online options currently available for that course. If the course is full or there's no indication that the course is offered online, contact your academic advisor for next steps.

Will the flu vaccine be required again?

Yes, all students, faculty and staff are required to submit proof of their flu vaccination. Faculty and staff are exptected to comply with this requirement regardless of whether they are working on campus or remotely.
