Important Part of Community
One of Wayne State University's goals is to develop mutually beneficial partnerships with our community as a catalyst for the region's social, cultural, economic and educational enrichment. Some of the many ways in which WSU is engaged in the community include:
- WSU is Detroit's 10th largest employer.
- WSU's $18 million Welcome Center provides a gateway between the university and the community to enhance services to students, faculty and staff.
- More than 800,000 people each year participate in WSU's community education and public service programs.
- The university co-sponsors community events, helping bring thousands of visitors to the University Cultural Center through the annual Festival of the Arts, America's Thanksgiving Parade and the Detroit Inner-City Games.
- Wayne State’s TechTown, Detroit’s only research and technology park, includes 42 companies as tenants after opening in 2004. Establishment of the park, a community of entrepreneurs, investors, mentors, service providers and corporate partners, is a major effort to diversify the local economy.
