James P. Hoffa to speak at labor law symposium Oct. 17 at Wayne Law

DETROIT - International Brotherhood of Teamsters President James P. Hoffa will give the keynote address during the 21st annual Bernard Gottfried Memorial Labor Law Symposium on Thursday, Oct. 17, at Wayne State University Law School.
Alumni, students and anyone interested in furthering their insight into labor law are invited to attend the symposium from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium at the law school, 471 W. Palmer St.
Hoffa has served as Teamsters union president since March 1999. He holds a degree in economics from Michigan State University and a law degree from University of Michigan Law School. He served as an attorney for the Teamsters union from 1969 to 1993.
The symposium is sponsored by Wayne Law, National Labor Relations Board Region 7 and the State Bar of Michigan's Labor and Employment Law Section.
The event will include breakout sessions led by noted local and national labor relations experts. Registration and a continental breakfast will start off the day at 8 a.m., to be followed by opening remarks by Wayne Law Dean Jocelyn Benson and Terry Morgan, regional director for Region 7 of the National Labor Relations Board. Morning panel discussions will include "Dues Checkoff, Witness Statements, Employee Discipline, What's Next? - Bargaining Obligations under the Current Board" and "Stare Decisis v. Partisan Politics, What Controls in Board Decisions?"
After a luncheon at noon, Hoffa will deliver the keynote address. Special afternoon sessions will include "Board Decisions on Employee Work Rules" and "Enhanced Remedies in Board Orders."
The registration fee for the symposium is $100, which includes all sessions, presentation materials, breakfast and lunch. Students, NLRB staff and government employees can register for a reduced cost of $25. The deadline for registration is Friday, Oct. 4. Proceeds from the symposium will be used to fund future educational programs and labor-related studies at Wayne Law.
Parking for the event is available for $6.50 in Structure 1 across West Palmer Street from the law school.
The symposium honors the labor relations vision of Bernard Gottfried (1925-1992), who was director of Region 7 of the National Labor Relations Board from 1973 until his death. He taught at Wayne Law for many years.
