As a result of Zipcar's popularity, a fourth vehicle was added to the campus fleet. The new Ford Escape, Elinor, joins Ford Focuses Fiesty and Fernando, and Ford Fiesta Frederika.
"Having the cars on campus and available 24/7 is a great benefit of being part of the WSU community," said Jon Frederick, director of Parking and Transportation Services. "With gas prices hovering around $4 per gallon and concerns over emissions, it's good to know that Wayne State offers alternative transportation options on campus."
Wayne State University Zipcar members pay a $25 annual fee, and rates on all Zipcars start at $8 per hour. Gas, insurance, reserved parking spots, up to 180 miles of driving per day and roadside assistance are included. Cars can be reserved for as little as an hour or for multiple days.
Zipcar spokeswoman Colleen McCormick says in addition to cost savings, car-sharing has environmental benefits. "Each vehicle takes 15-20 personally owned cars off the road," she said. "Studies have shown that Zipcar members reduce their overall mileage by about 50 percent after joining, helping to reduce CO2 emissions."
Students, faculty and staff 18 years and older and Detroit area residents who are at least 21 can reserve Wayne State's vehicles.
