Warrior Guides help prospective students navigate WSU's campus

Tevin Monroe probably knows more about Wayne State than most. As a Warrior Guide, that’s part of his job.

Monroe, a senior studying nutrition and food science, can tell you the history of campus buildings, the best places to eat in Midtown and relax on campus, how to navigate class registration, and more. As a Warrior Guide, he’s able to share all of that knowledge while hosting campus visits with prospective students.

“Choosing a university is not as simple as going on a website and comparing tuition rates. When a prospective student visits campus, they want to get a better understanding of Wayne State’s campus and culture as a whole,” he said. “As a student here, I’m able to share my own experience with them.”

Campus visits include information about the admission process and financial aid, as well as a tour. Most attendees are high school students and their families, but anyone interested in learning more about Wayne State is welcome.

While Monroe’s favorite part of the tour is the reflecting pool outside of the McGregor Memorial Conference Center, the campus tour also features the Student Center Building, the Mort Harris Recreation and Fitness Center, the David Adamany Undergraduate Library, residence halls, and more.

In addition to conducting campus tours, Warrior Guides assist those with questions by working at the Welcome Center information desk.

Choosing to be a Warrior Guide was a natural fit for Monroe, who has been involved in the Residence Hall Association and is also a member of Wayne State’s Street Squad, a group of students serving as WSU ambassadors on campus and in the community. In addition to being an excellent networking opportunity, he said that being a Warrior Guide has also helped improve his interpersonal communications skills.

“Being a Warrior Guide has furthered my own excitement about being at WSU and it’s helped me make friends and find my own voice,” he said. “Seeing students from tours back on campus is one of the best feelings. Sometimes, someone will recognize me on campus and say, ‘I was on your tour and it’s one of the reasons I’m here.’ To play a role in that decision process is really rewarding.”

Any current student can apply to be a Warrior Guide. The part-time position is a paid opportunity. For more information, contact Rachel Flum at 313-577-5560 or campusvisit@wayne.edu.
