More than 2,000 incoming Warriors welcomed during Convocation, FestiFall

As Stefanie Weaver walked through Gullen Mall, she felt as though she had found a new home. Weaver, who will major in nursing, is excited to start her journey at Wayne State and looks forward to getting involved on campus.

“I feel like Wayne State offers a lot of diversity that other schools don't,” Weaver said. “I chose to go to school in Detroit because I know this diversity will give me more exposure and experience."

The 18-year-old freshman from New Baltimore, Michigan, was one of more than 2,000 new Warriors to be officially welcomed to Wayne State University on Aug. 30 during New Student Convocation.

The annual event marked the formal beginning of incoming students’ journeys at WSU and brought together university administration, faculty and staff. Convocation featured remarks from campus leaders, who offered the newest Warriors advice about getting involved, challenging themselves and making the most of their time on campus.

“You’re all at a world-class university. Do not let this opportunity to learn pass you by,” Student Senate President Anthony Eid told the crowd of newcomers. “Open yourself to new ideas, opinions and ways of thinking.”

Convocation was followed by the FestiFall picnic, which offered students the chance to meet the dean of their respective college/school and learn more about involvement in learning communities and student organizations.

In addition to getting involved, Provost Keith Whitfield encouraged students to engage in classes, use all available resources and take accountability for their success.

“This is your university, and you have to treat it as such. You have to pay attention, you have to take care of it and you have to engage with it,” Whitfield said. “If you do, it will take care of you. Take those steps toward making a difference in your life and in the world.”
