FAQ

Is WSU's campus safe?

The campus is very safe. Police officers are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition, there are more than 140 blue light emergency phones across campus and in every elevator. Visit our WSU Police Department Website for more information.

Where do WSU faculty and staff live?

Wayne State faculty and staff live around the metropolitan area. More and more people are taking advantage of housing assistance through the Live Midtown program, making the campus area a place where they can live, work and play. Many faculty enjoy some of the best that historic Detroit has to offer, including communities such as Palmer Park, Boston Edison and Indian Village. Downtown offers gorgeous views of the Detroit River and Canada, as well as close access to campus and all that Detroit has to offer.

Some popular suburban areas include those to the east of Detroit (the Grosse Pointes, Harper Woods, Saint Clair Shores), those of the Woodward Corridor (Berkley, Birmingham, Ferndale, Royal Oak, Troy), and those to the west (Canton, Farmington, Farmington Hills, Northville, Novi, Plymouth).

What is the cost of living in the area?

The cost of living in the Detroit area is lower than average for an urban center in the United States. Affordable housing is plentiful and each community has something unique to offer. For recent cost-of-living information, visit the Detroit Regional Chamber.

I’m coming from outside the United States. What resources are available to me?

Your department, school or college is the best resource for information about relocating to metropolitan Detroit. For assistance with issues relating to immigration or visas, contact Wayne State’s Office for International Students and Scholars.
