About WSU

Wayne State Academic Symposium Founded in 1868, Wayne State University is a nationally recognized metropolitan research institution offering more than 400 academic programs through 13 schools and colleges to nearly 32,000 students. Wayne State’s main campus in Midtown Detroit comprises 100 buildings on nearly 200 acres; our five extension centers offer higher education throughout Southeast Michigan. We boast the most diverse student body among Michigan’s public universities, representing nearly every U.S. state and more than 70 countries.

Campus

Wayne State is the heart of Midtown, Detroit’s cultural hub and a hotbed of artistic talent. Dozens of museums, exhibition spaces, stages and historic buildings are concentrated within our walkable, two-square-mile neighborhood. Our campus offers all the amenities you would expect from a major university, including a fitness center, varied dining options and pleasant outdoor spots sheltered from the bustle of the city.

Unique to Wayne State is the TechTown business incubator complex. TechTown provides opportunities for research commercialization, as well as a platform for faculty to contribute to the revitalization of Michigan’s economy by lending their expertise to startups. Also on campus are two child care centers, a football stadium for our nationally ranked Division II Warriors and myriad art spaces.

Research

Research at Wayne State draws on both the strengths and challenges of our urban environment. We see Detroit as a natural extension of our classrooms, and we direct our expertise to help resolve many of the issues intrinsic to cities across the globe. Wayne State holds the prestigious Carnegie Foundation classification of RU/VH (research university with very high research activitiy), a distinction shared by only 2.3 percent of U.S. institutions.

Major campus-based research takes place in medicine, alternative energy, biosensors, electric-drive vehicles, water quality and biomedical engineering. Local organizations with which we collaborate include:

  • Perinatology Research Branch of the National Institutes of Health
  • Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center
  • Henry Ford Health System
  • Detroit Medical Center
  • National Biofuels Energy Laboratory
  • Kresge Eye Institute
  • North American Public Health Institute
