English proficiency exemptions

Applicants whose native language is not English (regardless of immigration status or citizenship) but who have been instructed in the English language are not necessarily exempt from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the Test of Written English (TWE) and the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) requirements.

If you meet at least one of the following requirements below, you are exempt from TOEFL/TWE/OPI:

  • Your native language is English.
  • You have completed all secondary or post-secondary education in the United States, Canada or other English-speaking countries.
  • If you are an international or non-immigrant transfer student from a non-English speaking country, you are exempt from the TOEFL provided you have completed an associate of arts or associate of science degree (college parallel degree) from a U.S. institution, or completed acceptable transfer credits from a U.S. institution of the equivalent of Wayne State’s basic composition and intermediate composition requirements with a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.

FAQ

I have lived in the United States for the last 10 years, but all of my previous education was in a country where English is not the native language. Do I still have to take the TOEFL?

Yes. Because your education was completed in a country where English is not the native language, you are still required to provide proof of English proficiency. The TOEFL is the most frequently used standardized indicator of English proficiency in higher education.
