With the improving weather, Wayne State and several neighbors will be implementing construction projects that will impact our daily activities.
Four noteworthy projects to be constructed on the University’s main campus are:
The A. Paul Schaapp Chemistry Building Renovation and Expansion - The erection of the tubular steel frame will commence later this spring and until the project is completed early next year, the walkways between Chemistry, State Hall and Science Hall will continue to be closed.
The construction of the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights at the Law School - When construction of the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights begins this summer, the northern terminus of Gullen Mall will be closed. Pedestrian and emergency vehicle access will be maintained but re-routed around the project.
The demolition of the buildings at Warren and Woodward - Multiple structures, located on the city block bounded by Woodward, Warren, Cass, and Hancock, are scheduled for demolition beginning in May. Sidewalks along the perimeter of the demolition site will be affected.
The continued renovations to Parking Structure No. 1 on Palmer - The eastern end will be closed to perform major structural repairs starting in early May.
In the neighboring community, two major projects will begin:
The construction of the Midtown Loop Greenway - The University Cultural Center Association (UCCA) will begin a project designed to improve the pedestrian experience on Kirby, John R., Canfield, and Cass. This summer, roadway and sidewalk construction will take place on Kirby from Cass to John R, and on John R. from Kirby to Canfield. Coincidental to the UCCA project is the Detroit Public Library’s project to renovate the Children’s wing at the corner of Kirby and Cass.
Parking expansion at the VA Hospital - The VA Hospital will be constructing a vertical expansion of the Red Parking Structure at John R. and Hancock. When the erection of precast concrete decking begins in early June, Hancock will be closed at John R. Monday through Friday during the evening. The construction company plans to do most work at night to minimize daytime access problems to employees working at WSU’s Mott building and 110 E. Warren building. In the evening, when access to Lot No. 57 from Hancock is closed, access to and from Lot No. 57 will be from the alley.
