Wayne State’s research funding and expenditures are higher than ever in its history — $257 million annually. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching classifies Wayne State as a university with very high research activity (RU/VH), a distinction held by only 2.3 percent of U.S. institutions of higher education. The University also has the Carnegie Foundation’s most comprehensive classification for community engagement.

High Impact Universities, a pilot project to benchmark the research performance of the world's universities, recently ranked Wayne State among the top 25 percent of all universities worldwide for research impact.

Wayne State’s advancement of its research mission is augmented by collaboration with our University Research Corridor partners, the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, in an alliance that brings in 94 percent of all research dollars attracted to Michigan each year; support for TechTown, the University’s thriving research and technology park; and partnerships with government, industry and business.

Wayne State also collaborates in research through the Perinatology Research Branch of the National Institutes of Health, the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, NextEnergy, the National Biofuels Energy Laboratory and the Great Lakes Stem Cell Commercialization Center. Major campus-based research takes place in a number of fields including medicine, alternative energy, biosensors, electric-drive vehicles, the nanosciences, biomedical engineering and health disparities.
