Midtown Detroit

Wayne State is located in the University Cultural Center in the heart of Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood, which is home to world-class museums, theatres, libraries, concert halls and professional sports venues. Among the cultural institutions only a short walk from main campus are:

• Detroit Institute of Arts
• Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History
• Detroit Historical Museum
• Detroit Science Center and Children’s Museum
• Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD)
• Max M. Fisher Music Center
• Detroit Public Library, main branch

The University’s commitment to help revitalize Midtown has resulted in its participation in two major initiatives. The first is the Hudson-Webber Foundation’s “15 by 15” project, which seeks to grow Midtown by 15,000 young professionals by 2015; the second is a “CEOs for Cities” program involving Midtown’s three anchor institutions — Wayne State, Henry Ford Health System and Detroit Medical Center. Wayne State has assumed leadership roles in collaborations designed to ensure public safety, provide local transportation, boost economic development and beautify the area.

Since 1999, the University has spent nearly $700 million dollars on projects that have changed Midtown’s landscape and ambience. Recent additions such as the Richard J. Mazurek, M.D. Medical Education Commons and the Marvin I. Danto Engineering Development Center, as well as construction and renovation projects such as the A. Paul Schaap Chemistry Building and Lecture Hall, are helping make Wayne State and adjacent Midtown a hub of activity, creativity and community service.
